Telling Tales
These family and personal portraits reflect the zeitgeist of the time, reflecting the historical similarities and speak of past and present, real and imagined and resonate across continents. In my paintings I  search for the alchemy that emerges from the contradiction  where things are not as they seem. Everyday observations are merged with magical elements as the boundaries between reality and fiction and past and present blur. Disrupting and decontextualizing  art history I am inspired to tell my own story, speaking of a shared humanity and kinship between all sentient beings in the natural world.

THROUGH OUR EYES
Three artists journey across Bass Strait to the stunning landscape of central Tasmania, exploring their unique response to the history, story, mood and atmosphere of this diverse landscape.

Lois Robertson
reflects a personal response to the formal aspects of landscape painting, searching for light and atmosphere along with environmental concerns about how the diversity of the landscape is constantly impacted by culture.

Tanya Chaitow is a narrative artist who works with implicit narratives of the Old Masters. Everyday observations are merged with magical elements as the boundaries between reality and fiction past and present blur.

Her work is a response to a sense of urgency around the protection of the rapidly dwindling native forest wilderness.

Isabelle Devos explores the connection to place by immersing herself in the solitude of the landscape in order to experience the particular sensory and spatial experiences of the area.

2019 Tanya Chaitow - In dreams I wake

Opening Date:
Saturday, 7 December, 3 - 5 pm
Exhibition Dates: 3 December - 21 December, 2019

Venue: Stella Downer Fine Art
1/24 Wellington Street, Waterloo, NSW 2017

In dreams I wake
slips into TANYA CHAITOW’s world of romantic landscapes and chimeric beings. Ambiguity and whimsy are important elements in CHAITOW’s works. Her fanciful paintings blur past and present, fact and fictions, internal and external reality. Adopting a naïve style, she is able to work intuitively to capture fleeting mental states and her poetic works are charged with a powerful psychological resonance. These romantic, almost ‘fairy tale’ depictions have the surreal quality of dreams; where they don’t quite make sense. However, it is through embracing dreams and these dreamlike qualities in her art that the artist feels most attuned to her sense of self.

2018 Mosman Art Prize

Exhibition Dates: Wednesday 26 September - Sunday 18 November 2018

Venue: Mosman Art Gallery and Community Centre
1 Art Gallery Way, Mosman, NSW 2088

Established in 1947, the Mosman Art Prize is Australia's oldest and most prestigious local government art award. It was founded by the artist, architect and arts advocate, Alderman Allan Gamble, at a time when only a small handful of art prizes were in existence in Australia and the community had very little support and few opportunities to exhibit their work.

As an acquisitive art award for painting, the winning artworks collected since 1947 form a splendid collection of modern and contemporary Australian art, reflecting all the developments in Australian art practice since 1947.

Venue: STELLA DOWNER FINE ART GALLERY -

This exhibition brings together an amalgamation of the artists represented and newly showcased at Stella Downer Fine Art. Here is to be found the diversity of work by TANYA CHAITOW, DAVID FAIRBAIRN, ASHLEY FROST, DI HOLDSWORTH, STEVE LOPES and DENESE OATES, through paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures. Adopting a naive style TANYA CHAITOW works intuitively to capture the poetics and psychological resonance of the subject matter of her work. She weaves a series of complex narratives that centre on negotiations of the self and contemplation of the human condition.

2014 Exhibition Opening: Moonlighting with Ai Wei Wei

“Narrative motif and symbolism is core to Tanya Chaitow’s work. These themes are often rendered in a combination of both personal and universally engaged forms and ideas. Moonlighting with Ai WeiWei explores recurrent themes of expressing freedom and tradition. It addresses ideas of the symbolic boundlessness of human connectivity beyond our physical restrictions. These paintings and works on paper embrace Ai WeiWei’s motif of the moon as representing the universal connectivity of ideas and humanity. She contends that “wherever or whoever we are in the world we look at the same moon [it symbolises] our connectivity beyond the geographic and political limitations”.
